POTATOES ARE ALMOST universally regarded as being Ireland’s national food. Whether we’re boiling it, roasting it, mashing it or making “salad” out of it, we sure do love the humble spud.

But which county can claim to love them the more than anyone?

Tesco Ireland has conducted very important research into what fruits and vegetables are most popular in each county in the Republic of Ireland.

Its findings show that bananas are by far the most popular fruit and vegetable, topping the sales in every single county, save for Clare, Donegal, Galway, Kildare and Mayo. (Those five renegades prefer berries.)

First of all, we can tell you that county thinks it’s too good for potatoes and that is…

The counties that love potatoes the most are Cavan, Carlow and Roscommon. 

In all three counties, potatoes were the second-most popular fruit and vegetable.
